Best RV Parks Near Mount Rushmore, South Dakota
Mount Rushmore draws nearly three million visitors a year, but most of them drive in, snap a photo, and leave. RV travelers know better. Staying the night in the Black Hills means you get the monument nearly to yourself in the early morning light — and the surrounding area has some of the best campgrounds in the entire state.
What to Expect Around Keystone
The town of Keystone sits two miles from the monument and is the hub for most RV travelers. Sites fill fast from mid-June through August, so booking 60 to 90 days out is not an exaggeration. Most parks in this corridor offer 30-amp and 50-amp service with full hookups, though pull-through availability is limited at the smaller, older properties.
Hill City: The Quieter Alternative
If you want more breathing room, Hill City is 17 miles southwest and has several large parks with better big-rig access. The roads between Hill City and Keystone are paved and manageable for rigs up to 40 feet, though a few of the switchbacks on Iron Mountain Road will give you pause. Check your rig length against the listed tunnel clearances before committing to that scenic route.
Custer State Park Campgrounds
Custer State Park, 15 miles south of Keystone, runs its own campgrounds through the state park system. These are among the most scenic in South Dakota — ponderosa pine, open meadows, and the occasional bison on the road. Electric-only hookups are the norm here. Full hookup sites exist but are limited and go fast. Reservations open in January for the summer season.
Hookup Tips for This Area
- Most parks in the Black Hills use 30-amp as the standard. Bring a 50-amp to 30-amp adapter.
- Water pressure is inconsistent at older parks — a pressure regulator is worth having.
- Cell service is spotty in the hills. Download your maps offline before you head out.
- Propane is available in Keystone and Hill City but priced at a premium. Fill before you arrive.
When to Visit
Late August and September is the sweet spot. The summer crowds thin out, temperatures drop into the 60s and 70s, and the parks are still fully open. Avoid the week of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in early August unless you enjoy noise and have booked a year in advance.
